The Barn at Botley Hill — Couture Ube Wedding Cake
A Sculptural Lavender Centrepiece for a Modern British–Filipino Celebration
The Vision
When Sophie and Kinkit reached out to Mooies to create their wedding cake, their request carried both sentiment and refinement. Ube had become “their flavour” throughout their relationship — a reminder of home for her, and a discovery of unexpected softness for him. The brief was to reinterpret that memory into a wedding centrepiece that felt modern, romantic, and unmistakably Mooies.
Their venue, The Barn at Botley Hill in Surrey, offered a warm rustic backdrop with sweeping countryside views. The couple envisioned a cake that would contrast softly against the barn’s textures: sculptural, lilac-toned, and floral without feeling traditional. A design built on quiet elegance — one that photographed beautifully from every angle, yet remained light, airy, and true to the purity of Ube Chiffon.
The goal was simple:
a cake that felt like them — refined, gentle, and full of meaning.
The Cake
We created a two-tier Couture Ube Chiffon Wedding Cake, finished in a cascading arrangement of hand-piped buttercream roses. Each rose was shaped petal by petal, forming a flowing vertical composition that wrapped seamlessly around the front of the structure.
Inside, the sponge was our signature Ube Chiffon — extraordinarily light, cloudlike, and infused with real purple yam for a naturally delicate flavour. The exterior was finished in Swiss meringue buttercream, chosen for its smooth, satin-like finish and stability throughout a long wedding day.
To support the sculptural height, each tier was reinforced with bespoke internal supports, ensuring clean, sharp edges and perfect balance once assembled onsite.
A matching Ube cutting cake accompanied the main design, allowing the couple to serve additional guests while preserving the centrepiece for display and photography.
The final result felt modern yet romantic — a lavender-toned sculpture that echoed the softness of chiffon and the couple’s own aesthetic harmony.
Each tier was reinforced with bespoke internal supports to maintain balance while stacked, ensuring the structure remained elegant and flawless during display.
Playful red maraschino cherries were placed with couture precision across the top, a nod to vintage charm while maintaining a modern, editorial feel. The final result: romantic, minimal, and quietly nostalgic — a perfect match for the Firehouse’s intimate setting.
The Process
From the first message to the final hand placement of roses at the venue, the entire journey was handled through the Mooies Concierge, ensuring calm coordination and clarity at every stage.
We discussed sizing, colour tone, delivery timing, and how the cake would be staged within the venue’s layout. The couple requested a design that remained free from metallics or textured finishes — favouring purity, precision, and a clean couture silhouette.
The delivery was timed to align with the venue’s setup schedule. Mooies’ concierge team travelled to The Barn at Botley Hill, where the cake was assembled onsite, checked for perfect temperature adjustment, and given its final rose placements under the natural evening light.
Guests passing through the space paused to admire it.
One whispered, “It looks sculpted — like real roses.”
It was exactly the kind of quiet luxury the couple had hoped for.
Why It Matters
This commission reflects the heart of Mooies’ philosophy: relationships built over time, and craftsmanship that carries meaning.
Sophie and Kinkit first discovered Mooies through weekend orders to their Canary Wharf residence — small indulgences that soon became part of their story. Choosing Mooies for their wedding day symbolised a deeper level of trust, one that honours the emotional connection between flavour, memory, and celebration.
Their wedding cake is more than a centrepiece.
It is the culmination of years of shared moments — transformed into something sculptural, refined, and unforgettable.
“Luxury is about trust. When someone chooses you for their most important day — that’s when the work becomes legacy.”
