What Is a Black Velvet Cake?
A Black Velvet Lambeth Cake is a soft, moist chocolate cake made with black cocoa, which gives it a deep dark colour and a rich, slightly bitter cocoa flavour, like a darker cousin of red velvet. Ours is layered with cream cheese frosting, finished with a chocolate drip, and piped in the vintage Lambeth style. Our couture take on a gothic cake works for Halloween and any celebration that calls for drama.
What’s in Our Black Velvet Cake
The sponge is made with black cocoa powder, which is richer and slightly more bitter than regular cocoa. It’s layered with smooth cream cheese frosting, finished with a chocolate drip, and decorated with vintage Lambeth piping.
You can choose your colour finish:
- Deep black, as pictured: black cocoa with black gel food colouring, for a true jet-black finish.
- Natural charcoal: black cocoa only, with no added food colouring, giving a softer, deep grey-black finish.
Our deep black finish contains colours E102 and E122, which may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children. Our natural charcoal finish contains no added food colouring.
Ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, black cocoa powder, buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla extract, cream cheese, butter, chocolate. The deep black finish also contains food colouring (E102, E122, E133).

Will a Black Cake Stain Your Teeth?
Our deep black finish uses food colouring, which can temporarily stain teeth and mouths, as with most black cakes. If you’d rather avoid this, choose our natural charcoal finish, made with black cocoa only and no added colouring.
